The Original Quartermaine: Dex vs Gio

The Port Charles Update is a General Hospital Podcast covering all the juicy GH storylines week to week. You can find us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify Podcasts, most podcast platforms and YouTube.

Get your videographic memories ready and let's see if there could be a little something to the idea that Dex, NOT Gio, was meant to be the original Quartermaine. Brook Lynn has let us all know that she and Dante had a baby, Lois let us know that baby is Gio, and Cody let us know that for one summer, Dante was in love with Brook Lynn. Unsurprisingly, Lulu let us know that she is not above breaking into confidential files and outing Brook Lynn’s secret baby.

Anything can happen in a soap, like suddenly expanding on Dante and Brook Lynn’s history. When Brook Lynn came onto the scene, she was the bane of Lulu’s existence. But the only history Brook Lynn and Dante ever shared was a lifelong friendship and mom’s that were besties…until now.  Soaps can change course on a dime, if we can bring people back from the dead, what’s a little rewriting of history. But what if the new Quartermaine that was meant to be introduced was… Dex!

During the Michael and Dex collab, there was definitely intrigue building around Dex’s background. We had put out a few thoughts during that time about who Dex could be. We debated between Ned or AJ being Dex’s dad, leaning a little more toward Ned over time. If you recall, there was a scene where Joss takes Dex to the Quartermaine’s, and these two walk in on a very interesting conversation. The Quartermaine’s were making a comparison between Edward and Ned, Edward being a philanderer and the mention of Ned’s past as a rock star, when in walks Dex. The mere visual of Dex showing up at the Quartermaine's with Joss was jarring, and clearly intentional. We have seen it time and again, animosity between characters who then turn out to be related, and if Tracy comes with anything… it’s animosity.

Here is the clip of Joss and Dex at the Quartermaine’s and later at the hospital where she begins explaining the family tree.

During the scene at the Quartermaine’s, Tracy exchanged a few words with Joss and Dex. Later on, there was a pillow talk scene between Joss and Dex where she was giving him further background on the Quartermaine’s, focused primarily on Tracy. This was strange given the limited interactions Joss or Dex had with the Quartermaine’s at the time. Given Tracy’s animosity toward Sonny, could you imagine the fallout if it turned out that Dex was a product of Ned’s rock star days, and then having to cope with the fact that her grandchild works for Sonny.

Soon after, the spotlight was on Ned and his past – when he lost his memory thanks to Nina. Suddenly Ned drifted into Dex’s orbit when Sonny took Ned in. The Quartermaine’s and Lois were trying to reach Ned, bringing out old photo albums of his life as Ned and Eddy Main. With Eddy Main taking center stage, this would have been a prime time for memories of a past love to resurface and for any connection to Dex to be revealed.

During this time, Nina was benefiting from Ned’s memory loss, she might have even financed his exit out of Port Charles. At this point, Dex saw right through Nina, married to Sonny or not, he made his feelings clear to her at the Savoy, spelling out where his loyalties lied. The groundwork was all laid out, it was the perfect time to start following the breadcrumbs to a secret Quartermaine that not even Ned knew about. While Dex may not have known he had any connections to Ned, his suspicion of Nina, who had clearly harmed Ned and wanted his memories to stay gone would have been the perfect avenue to a Dex and Ned father son revelation.

But in the end, nothing came of Ned being Eddy Main, no real memories, just a caricature of a past rockstar persona. In the end, Ned’s amnesia was just a waiting room for Nina’s secret about the SEC. Even when Ned regained his memories, nothing came of it, Nina’s secret remained under wraps at Olivia’s request. The entire story just fell flat.

When Gio came onto the scene, there was an adorable budding bromance and respect between Dex and Gio at Brook Lynn’s wedding. Looking back, it feels more like the passing of the baton of what could have been. They did not opt to keep Dex on, or explore his past, in the end he turned into Joss’ origin story, establishing a secret life as a WSB agent.

Upon listening to ‘The Daily Drama Podcast’ about how quickly they changed course with Sasha, connecting her to a legacy family, pivoting from Cody to Michael, it hit me that the same thing could have happened when debating who the next long lost Quartermaine would be. And here we are, closer and closer to the Gio reveal. One thing that remains, with or without Dex, is the Sonny and Tracy factor regarding the new Quartermaine addition. Similar to Dex, Sonny has a pre-existing relationship with Gio and currently has a strong involvement in Gio’s life. One of the huge advantages of Gio being the new Quatermaine is the amount of people that will be pulled into this storyline.

When I am not watching GH, posting about GH, or blogging about GH, I am often having fun creating and working on other projects. A recent project was creating a coloring book with my kids, including all the types of pictures they like to color. Together we created the Cutie Pie Coloring book, that isn't just a coloring book, but a world where you can create and name your characters to be added to our Cutie Pie Collection on instagram. Let’s be real, it’s a fun way to immortalise your child’s creation, making it easier when the images secretly make it off the fridge and into the recycling bin. You can check out the coloring book on Amazon USA or Canada. Visit our Cutie Pie Coloring Instagram page where you can submit your Cutie Pies and join our World’s Largest Cutie Pie Collection. The perfect coloring book for anyone who loves to color and create.
