The Future of Port Charles is Female

Sonny and Jason had that moment you knew would come but also couldn’t believe was actually happening when they talked about passing on the business. With Jason tapping out and declining the request, the question is, who will carry on Sonny’s criminal empire? With Sonny’s current health issues, the question is becoming even more pressing. We all know Sonny’s replacement would not be an outsider, and have debated amongst his children over the years. While Michael is temporarily out of the picture, he grew up in Sonny’s world and would be well versed in the role of Kingpin, but it was never the life Jason or Carly wanted for him. Frankly, I don't think any of us want that for Michael, he embraced his Quartermaine side, and deserves a safer life after the childhood he’s had. However, he would make an excellent adviser and ally for any of his siblings who take on the mantle of Sonny’s empire. 

Dante at one point was directly involved in Sonny’s business while he was working undercover. We know that Dante has a passion for the law, and that passion always kept a sliver of distance between Sonny and Dante no matter how close they were at any given point. There was a time where Dante was getting frustrated with the law and we thought this would be the beginning of the end of his time on the right side of the law. Regardless of his frustrations, Dante chooses the law time and again, but for how long? Dante never wanted to put his father behind bars, but how would he feel if that someone was Kristina? Would his ideals hold firm, or would he feel compelled to dive right in, if only to protect his sister. Dante would certainly find it challenging to go up against Krisitna, but he’s had practice towing the line. Like Jason, Dante is likely to steer clear of that life for his son(s).  

The kids who are the most like Sonny were Morgan and Kristina. With Kristina leaning into her homicidal side as of late, we would be remiss not to consider her as the future Queenpin of Port Charles. While Sonny has more self-control than Kristina, and the ability to strategize, he himself can be volatile and impulsive, he just happens to have Jason on the payroll, something Kristina would also need. Interestingly enough, her ‘Jason’ is currently in training. Around the time Joss was recruited by Brennan, Kristina was clearly getting closer to crossing that murder line, two journeys happening in parallel. 

Based on Kristina’s erratic behaviour it can be hard to see how she could be ready anytime soon to take on Sonny’s business and keep Port Charles safe in the process. She is about to be involuntarily committed, if Alexis can bring herself to pull the trigger. While this move will keep Kristina out of prison, it may be the help she needs to learn how to keep her emotions in check and harness her anger to be used in a targeted manner rather than transformed into pure chaos. Kristina’s darkness has been awakened and I don’t think it will be put back in a box any time soon, regardless of her momentary guilt about almost killing her sister’s father. While Michael understands the mob, Kristina actually has experience in all of Sonny’s legit businesses. She’s hovered around the periphery of Sonny’s world for so long, and soon she will take it. For the first time Kristina will be right there in the center of it all, with everyone else on the outside looking in. 

Ava’s financial storyline has just kept going with no end in sight. Alexis’ decision to have Kristina committed would completely shut down Ava’s hope for a reversal in fortune. Ava has made it clear she cannot survive on draft beer and live like a commoner. If Ava can't get her Cassadine money back, she does have one other option, and that is to get back into ‘the life’. If this happens we may have a future meeting of the 5 families that will include Miss Wu, Miss Jerome and Miss Corinthos. 

I can’t say Sonny or Jason would ever want this life for Kristina, but it will be hers, and they may not have a choice but to give her the tools she needs to survive in it. Things are moving fast, and what is likely is that Sonny and Jason will become even more vulnerable with Kristina more than ready to help her father, maybe even forced to. Jason may be her number two for a time, but that spot will later be taken on by Josslyn. Michael as usual, not being law enforcement has the luxury of balancing both sides, supporting his sisters while keeping his hands clean in a way that Dante and Molly can’t. Michael’s role as fixer is nowhere close to over, especially when it comes to his sisters. It will be a challenge the day Michael does see that Joss and Kristina really do have things covered. 

The scene when Molly finds out about Ric’s car crash, they sat Molly and Mac on one side, and Cody and Kristina on the other, drawing clear lines between both sides of the law. Once Kristina has transitioned into her new role, Molly, like Ric, minus his very wide shades of grey, will want nothing more than a relationship with her sibling, while finding it fundamentally challenging not to lose herself or her ideals while doing so. Molly may never become Kristina’s Diane, and in order to carry on the Ric and Sonny sibling legacy, these sisters will need to remain on opposite sides of the law. While Dante is always tempted to be completely on the side of his family, he has always held true to his principles, and I do not see him ever wavering on that, even when he does waver. The future of Port Charles is female, and Kristina and Ava are likely to be feuding for years to come, but this time on a very illegal battlefield.
