In our recent podcast episode titled 'A Referendum On Sonny', we talked about the possibility that he might end up running for Mayor. It wouldn’t be the first time that a TV show has taken a character from criminal to politician, for any fans of the series Ghost or Daredevil, you’ll know what I am talking about. So far the consensus is that this referendum Laura has proposed is really a referendum on Sonny. Everyone seems confident about where that will lead, even Sonny is gearing up for a fight. Curtis is the only one telling Drew and the audience to hold their horses. Maybe Curtis has a point, the vote has yet to begin.

While Carly urges Sonny not to campaign, Diane recommends just the opposite. She is telling Sonny to come out of the shadows and highlight the good he’s done. Let’s take a second to consider Sonny’s heart condition, a product of a 25 year old gunshot wound that saved Alexis’ life. Sonny pushed Alexis out of the way right when the shooting started, and Alexis later acknowledged how he saved her life while awaiting word on Sonny’s surgery Carly would not let Tony perform. Understandably Diane would not want to bring attention to any shooting Sonny was involved in, but regardless of the chaos that comes with Sonny’s world, so does the charm, and the help he’s provided many of the characters on the show with. Scott would be the first to express frustration about the positive light through which many see Sonny, and that is exactly the version of Sonny the show is looking to bring back. Let’s face it, Sonny hasn’t been himself since he got Mike’d up in Nixon Falls, here and there we get a glimpse of the man, the myth, the dimples we fell in love with decades ago. With Diane’s help, many of the citizens of Port Charles may get a glimpse of that guy, and if all goes her way, they will get to know the local business man, and most of all the philanthropist.

Interestingly enough, they have constantly made mention of Ezra being shady about his finances, and if he is shady about that, you can’t expect that he has been philanthropic in any way. While Carly asked that Sonny not campaign to keep the piers, it’s quite possible a campaign is inevitable. Right now, Sonny has some major challenges, his heart condition for one, Jenz moving in on his territory, the referendum, and coming up with his exit strategy from the “business”. We all know from our collective Port Charles mob experience, that any weakness is not just a threat to Sonny, but a threat to his family. I can think of one way for Sonny to get out of the mob while retaining power in Port Charles. While I don’t think Sonny’s criminal enterprise would fall apart, he would need to leave it in the hands of a successor and take a very public step back from anyone involved in his old life in order to save his piers and hold onto to any power.

If Sonny runs for Mayor, this would mean Sonny versus Drew’s human puppet, Ezra. I can’t imagine Sonny running against Laura, but I can see Laura’s number’s tanking, and becoming exhausted like they demonstrated when Jordan resigned. While Laura is dealing with her issues, Sonny would be pulled further into the spotlight due to the referendum, creating a little buzz from the public. Ezra is a lot of things, but charming isn’t one of them, and Sonny has got charm for days. I could see the public leaning toward Sonny, followed by Sonny being encouraged to enter the mayoral election just to make sure Ezra does not run unopposed. With the person doing the encouraging being Diane, could you imagine Sonny as mayor and Diane as deputy Mayor, finally on the same side. This move would be a complete 180 regarding everything we have come to know about Sonny and Port Charles. While it could appear like a way for Sonny to ride off into the sunset, this would actually be the beginning of some epic storytelling. Sonny has always been a family man, and because of that, he suffered greatly when his business hurt the ones he loved. Becoming mayor would allow Sonny to live up to the best parts of himself everyone else always saw in him. Sonny has struggled with his darkness but he has also struggled with accepting the good within himself, something Mike tried to help him with during the Nixon Fall storyline.

Sonny had a ‘what if’ episode where we all got to see what his life would have been like had he made different choices. What if Sonny’s choices were always meant to lead him into a legitimate life?

When I am not watching GH, posting about GH, or blogging about GH, I am often having fun creating and working on other projects. A recent project was creating a coloring book with my kids, including all the types of pictures they like to color. Together we created the Cutie Pie Coloring book, that isn't just a coloring book, but a world where you can create and name your characters to be added to our Cutie Pie Collection on instagram. Let’s be real, it’s a fun way to immortalise your child’s creation, making it easier when the images secretly make it off the fridge and into the recycling bin. You can check out the coloring book on Amazon USA or Canada and share it with anyone who loves to color and create. Visit our Cutie Pie Coloring Instagram page where you can submit your Cutie Pies and join our World’s Largest Cutie Pie Collection.
